New OneBait Mosquito Trap Lure Protects Against Zika Virus  (5/9/2017)

Universal Lure Attracts 5X More Mosquitoes
National Hardware Show Booth 11821

WINSTON-SALEM, NC (May 9, 2017) – Blue Rhino® (, a leader in outdoor living products, introduces the mosquito trap lure OneBait™, the only lure proven to catch the mosquito that carries the Zika virus. It is also a universal lure designed for use with any mosquito trap, including SkeeterVac®, Stinger®, Black Flag®, and other traps.

OneBait is very effective in attracting mosquitoes. Studies show that most leading mosquito traps using OneBait can catch as many as five times more mosquitoes than when no lure is used. And the mosquitoes it catches may carry not only the Zika virus, but also the West Nile virus, encephalitis, chikungunya and dengue. The lure uses tested patented technology, which was developed by Biogents, a leader in mosquito control research.

To date, more than 20,000 Americans have tested positive for the Zika virus, which is primarily spread to people through the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito but can also be sexually transmitted. Locally acquired mosquito-borne cases of Zika have been reported in every state.

One in five people infected with the Zika virus develop symptoms such as fever, rash, joint pain, and red eyes, which are usually mild and last several days to a week. However, Zika can cause serious microcephaly, a neurological condition in which infants are born with abnormally small heads and brains, and other birth defects in babies born to women infected with the Zika virus during pregnancy. The Centers for Disease Control registry for the U.S. suggests that at least 1,246 pregnant women have been infected with Zika, and at least 824 of those pregnancies have come to term or have ended. To date, 17 babies have been born with Zika-related birth defects in the U.S.

There is no treatment for those infected with the virus. According to the CDC, the best way to protect against Zika is to protect oneself from mosquito bites.

How OneBait Works
The patented mosquito attractant used in OneBait contains lactic acid, ammonium bicarbonate, hexanoic acid and other ingredients – all approved by the EPA, USDA and FDA. The special patented blend is designed to mimic human skin scents, emanations and odors to attract mosquitoes to traps where they are captured and die. The unopened sachet packet is placed in the space allocated for added mosquito attractants inside the trap. It can also be attached to the outside of the trap using the provided adhesive strip. The lure should be replaced after eight weeks of use.

OneBait was developed in conjunction with Biogents AG, an innovative company on the forefront of mosquito control research. The company spent more than 12 years analyzing the composition of scents and odors that are attractive to mosquitoes and finding the key factors that influence the behavior of these important disease vectors, with the goal of developing better methods to control mosquitoes in an intelligent, environmentally safe and targeted manner.

The OneBait Universal Mosquito Trap Lure will be available nationwide in the spring and each packet will retail for $24.99.

New Zappers and Traps
Blue Rhino also introduces new bug zappers and insect traps that are designed to work with the OneBait Universal Mosquito Trap Lure to protect against the Zika virus and other mosquito-borne diseases.

The Bite-Guard® Insect Trap offers seven ways to lure and catch biters, including:

  • OneBait Universal Mosquito Trap Lure
  • 360 degree ultraviolet lighting that attracts a broader range of species
  • Titanium dioxide, that combines with UV light to create carbon dioxide
  • Warmth or heat that mimics the human body
  • Wave dome that interrupts insects’ flight path and directs them into the trap
  • A large quiet fan creates increased suction power to draw in insects
  • TacTrap™, a patented adhesive paper that effectively lures and traps

The electric, 120-volt insect trap provides ½ acre coverage and retails for $79.

Bite-Guard® Bug Zappers utilize the OneBait lure and 360 degree ultraviolet lighting to attract a broader range of species. The collection tray detaches for easy cleaning. An exclusive integrated circuit on a printed circuit board increases the lamp’s working life up to 20 percent (8,000 to 12,000 hours) and uses 30 percent less energy. The 900-volt unit covers ½ acre and retails for $39.99; and the 2,300-volt unit covers 1 acre and retails for $59.99. Both come with a free OneBait lure packed inside; additional packets can be purchased separately for $24.99 each.
